content-type

Type of Content

Subject or type of content that makes this element semantically distinct.

Remarks

The values for this attribute may include information classes, semantic categories, or functions for grouping elements. This attribute could identify: the name of a drug, company, or product; systematics terms such as genus, species, or family; or biological systems components, such as gene, protein, or peptide. The attribute could also be used to record that the content of a table cell is a total or subtotal amount, that a sidebar (<boxed-text>) contains a part of a related standard, or that a <statement> is a theorem or a proof.
Conversion Note: This attribute can be used to preserve semantic tagging that can’t be captured directly with an element defined in this Tag Set.
Display/Formatting Note: The presence of a @content-type attribute may be used to treat its element in a distinct way, for example, giving the word, phrase, or structure a different look in print or on display. This type of formatting may be guided by the value of the attribute, for example, making all circulatory system words (identified by a <named-content> element) red or putting a background image behind case studies.

Used on Element: <named-content>

ValueMeaning
Text, numbers, or special charactersNames/describes the distinct function for the <named-content> that cannot otherwise be described by the elements in this Suite. For example, a chapter in a medical book might use the value “body-system” or “gene” while a chapter in a management book might use the value “product-name” or “stock-code”.
RestrictionThis attribute is required; it must be provided if the element is used.

ValueMeaning
Text, numbers, or special charactersNames/describes any distinct semantics of the associated element. This may be used to preserve the semantic intent of prior tagging, for example, to record that a table cell was a total or subtotal amount. This may also be used to attach information classes to an element for retrieval purposes.
RestrictionThis is an optional attribute; there is no default.

Used on these Elements:

ValueMeaning
Text, numbers, or special charactersNames/describes any distinct semantics of the associated note or group of notes. The @content-type attribute may be used to describe the semantic intent of the note.
RestrictionThis is an optional attribute; there is no default.

Used on Element: <meta-note>

ValueMeaning
Text, numbers, or special charactersNames/describes any distinct semantics of the associated metadata note (<meta-note>). The @content-type attribute may be used to preserve the semantic intent of the note, such as a adoption note or issuance information.
RestrictionThis is an optional attribute; there is no default.

Suggested usage

For <meta-note> only: Although there are no set values for the @content-type attribute when used on the <meta-note> element, and thus the attribute may contain any string, formal meta note types may include:
  • adoption
  • cautionary / Anwendungswarnvermerk
  • code-info (information of regulatory agency adoption)
  • committee-contact-info (information concerning committee pages)
  • endorsement
  • errata-info (where to look for and find errata online)
  • issuance-info (text regarding date of issuance)
  • legalese (text blocks inside the front matter that pertain to legal matters or rights, typically displayed as part of the copyright page or title page material.)
  • next-scheduled-issuance-info (information concerning the next scheduled edition/issuance/updates)
  • objection / Einspruchsvermerk)
  • preliminary / Vorbemerkungen
  • publication / Veröffentlichungsvermerk
  • status / Statusvermerk
  • superseding / Ersatzvermerk
  • validity / Beginn der Gültigkeit /

Example 1

The @content-type attribute names the semantic content of a <meta-note>:
...
<meta-note content-type="superseding" id="superseding.note.reg">
 <p>Supersedes EN ISO 13849-1:2006</p>
</meta-note>
<meta-note content-type="superseding" id="superseding.note.nat">
 <p>Supersedes DIN EN ISO 13849-1:2007-07</p>
</meta-note>
<meta-note content-type="validity" id="validity.note.nat">
 <title>Start of validity</title>
 <p>This standard takes effect on 2008-12-01.</p>
 <p>DIN EN 954-1:1997-03 and DIN EN 954-1 Supplement 1:2000-01 may be
  used in parallel until 2009-11-30 and DIN EN ISO 13849-1:2007-07
  until 2009-12-28.</p>
</meta-note>
...
