Introductory Title Part

Container for the optional first part (introductory part) of a standard’s title, that typically indicates the broad context of the standard; for example, words based on the title of the responsible committee or a stock phrase such as “Standard Specification for”.


Optional: Not all standards documents have introductory titles.
ISO Note: In cases where the ISO or ISO-related standard contains only one part and the full title contains only one em-dash, there may be ambiguity over whether the main title element is:
  • the part preceding the em-dash (followed by a complementary title element) or
  • the part following the em-dash (preceded by an introductory title element).
If the standard has multiple parts, then there can be no ambiguity, as a part number will be given after the em-dash.

  • Main: The optional main portion of the standard’s title, which typically indicates the principal subject of the standard. A main title may contain only text or include its own label and subtitles.
  • Complementary: The optional complementary title(s) are the final part(s) of a standard’s title. Complementary titles follow the <main> title and typically provide details concerning which particular aspect of the general topic is treated by the standards document. Each complementary title may contain only text or include its own label and subtitles.
